The Chiefs of the six Mississauga Nations affirmed from the beginning of the To Honour and Respect project that the makakoon would be visiting and that they should return to England after the loan to fulfill their intended purpose. The To Honour and Respect planning circle members discussed what might remain in Michi Saagiig communities as a legacy of the project. Planning Circle member Veronica King-Jamieson (Mississaugas of the Credit) suggested that there should be a legacy quillwork piece to stay in the community. Quillworker Sandra D. Moore of Hiawatha First Nation took up the challenge. She designed the piece with motifs relevant to the project and meaningful to her, and then invited members of the public to add quills to the design. Over 700 individuals from around the world--most of whom had never quilled before--contributed to the Legacy Piece.

Les chefs des six Nations Mississauga ont affirmé dès le début du projet Honorer et Respecter que les makakoon seraient en visite et qu’ils devraient retourner en Angleterre à la fin du prêt afin de remplir leur fonction. Les membres du cercle de planification du projet Honorer et Respecter ont discuté de ce qui pourrait rester dans les communautés Michi Saagiig en guise de pièce commémorative du projet. Veronica King-Jamieson (Mississaugas de Credit), membre du cercle de planification, a suggéré qu’une pièce de piquage à fonction commémorative soit conservée dans la communauté. Sandra D. Moore, de la Première Nation de Hiawatha, a répondu à l’appel. Elle a conçu la pièce avec des motifs pertinents pour le projet et pour elle-même, puis elle a invité les membres du public à ajouter des piquants à la pièce. Plus de 700 personnes du monde entier, dont la plupart n’avaient jamais travaillé avec des piquants de porc-épic, ont contribué à la création de la pièce commémorative.

Sandra titled her work, "We Have Not Forgotten." She designed the Legacy Piece with images that include motifs from the makakoon, a canoe and other images from each of the six Mississauga Nations logos, an orange shirt to remind us of residential schools and their legacies, a poppy to honour veterans, an orange shirt reminding us of children who went to residential schools, and a red dress reminding us of missing and murdered Indigenous women. She also included the view of beautiful Rice Lake that she sees from her house. On the birch tree at right, she has included the initials LB and LP, to honour the THR co-curators Lori Beavis and Laura Peers.

This piece also reflects the inspiration and learning that quillworkers experienced when the ancestors visited. Sandra has included birch leaves and other elements worked in knotted quills, a technique she learned from Betsy Simon's box.

Une vision magnifique : Sandra a intitulé son travail « Nous n'avons pas oublié ». Elle a conçu la Legacy Piece avec des images comprenant des motifs de makakoon, le canot figurant sur le logo de la nation Mississauga, un aigle et une plume d’aigle, un chandail orange pour évoquer les séquelles des pensionnats, un coquelicot pour rendre hommage aux anciens combattants et une robe rouge pour évoquer les femmes autochtones portées disparues ou assassinées. Elle a également inclus la vue qu’elle a de sa maison sur le magnifique lac Rice. Sur le bouleau à droite, elle a inscrit les initiales LB et LP, en hommage aux co-commissaires de H+R, Lori Beavis et Laura Peers.

​ Cette pièce reflète également l’inspiration et les enseignements que les artisanes du piquage ont reçus lors de la visite des Ancêtres. Sandra a inclus des feuilles de bouleau et d’autres éléments travaillés en piquants noués, une technique qu’elle a découverte sur la boîte de Betsy Simon.
"Crowd-quilled"
At powwows, workshops and other public events, Sandra invited members of the public to add quills to the Legacy Piece. The panel will remain in Hiawatha First Nation when the makakoon return to England.

La foule au service de l’art : Lors de pow-wow, d’ateliers et d’autres événements collectifs, Sandra a invité les membres du public à ajouter des piquants à la pièce commémorative. Le panneau restera à la Première Nation de Hiawatha lorsque les makakoon retourneront en Angleterre.
